The sixth and final 13,000TEU dual-fuel LNG-powered container ships are now under construction at the Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding for France’s CMA CGM.

Versatile ships

The vessels designed by Hudong-Zhonghua and ordered by CMA CGM are versatile ships capable of using either traditional fuel or liquefied natural gas (LNG). They are 336 meters long and 51 meters wide, featuring a 14,000 cubic meter MARK III LNG cargo tank. With a maximum capacity of 13,200 TEUs, they can load up to 2,400 containers.

These vessels incorporate various technologies to enhance their performance. They employ flexible container loading technology and utilize energy-saving ducts, rudder balls, and other devices. The main engine of this containership type has been upgraded with an intelligent control exhaust gas recirculation (ICER) system. When compared to a 23,000 TEU dual-fuel containership, this system reduces methane to escape in gas mode by 50% and greenhouse gas emissions by over 28%.

Dual-fuel technology

CMA CGM’s order for this dual-fuel, LNG-powered containership is part of a larger $2.3 billion investment in such vessels, announced in April 2021.

In a recent development, CMA CGM, a major French shipping company, placed a substantial order worth $3.06 billion with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The contract involves the construction of 16 large container ships.

Commitment to investing

The order consists of twelve 15,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel powered container ships and four 23,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel powered container vessels. This information was confirmed by a spokesperson from CMA CGM to Offshore Energy.

These vessels signify CMA CGM’s commitment to investing in dual-fuel technology, utilizing both methanol and LNG as cleaner-burning fuels for their fleet.
