MOL has announced that its next generation car carrier will feature the energy-saving rounded bow, which can minimise the CO2 emissions.
A joint research by MOL, MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. and Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen) Inc. has developed the new hull design – the rounded bow shape.
What is the benefit of the rounded bow shape?
- It will minimise the wind resistance,
- It is also expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about two percent compared to today’s car carriers.
Earlier, MOL developed the wind resistance-reducing car carrier Courageous Ace, a new energy-saving windshield for containerships to reduce wind resistance and a new prototype sailing rig called the “Power Assist Sail.”
The innovative bow design is the result of the Wind Challenger Project, in which the company has participated. The project is promoting research and development on ways to cut wind resistance and utilize wind to help propel the merchant ships of the future.
“Senpaku ISHIN” is a project launched by MOL to develop innovative new vessels that will reduce the environmental impact of vessel operations. It continues R&D on a range of environmental technologies, and works to protect the environment by reducing the volume of CO2 emissions generated by vessels.
