Provaris Unveils ABS AIP for Advanced Hydrogen Storage

Provaris Energy’s gaseous hydrogen floating storage concept has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from ABS, as reported by Compsmag.

Innovative solution

ABS has awarded approval in principle (AIP) to Provaris Energy for their gaseous hydrogen floating storage concept called H2Leo. The innovative solution has a design capacity of 300 to 600 tons of hydrogen, with a potential expansion of up to 2,000 tons. H2Leo is designed to cater to different hydrogen supply chains and applications, such as marine bunkering, intermittent/backup storage for green hydrogen production, and long-term storage for excess renewable energy. ABS has been assisting Provaris with their H2Neo design for a compressed hydrogen carrier as well.

Hydrogen value chain

ABS President and CEO, Christopher J. Wiernicki, highlighted the importance of safe and efficient hydrogen storage and transportation for the global hydrogen value chain. He expressed pride in supporting Provaris Energy’s work, which has the potential to contribute significantly to the clean energy transition. Provaris Energy’s CEO, Martin Carolan, emphasized the need for compressed hydrogen storage in the growing demand for clean renewable energy. The H2Leo concept includes two cargo tanks with independent insulation, safety valves, and manifolds for hydrogen transfer. ABS conducted risk and safety workshops to assess and mitigate handling risks associated with compressed hydrogen.

ABS and Provaris Energy will collaborate on the final approval, design testing, and construction of the cargo tank. The plan involves conducting prototype testing later this year, followed by the final approval of the Class. Unit construction is expected to commence in 2025. ABS’s support for Provaris Energy’s compressed hydrogen technology is recognized as crucial in driving the global clean energy transition.
