We loll around them, sipping cocktails, reading a book, basking in the warmth. We might dip our toes in or take the plunge. It’s often the first thing we check out when we board, choosing our preferred deckchair. On a ship, many would agree, there’s nothing more appealing than the pool. Who isn’t dreaming of being poolside in warmer climes right now?

Multiple Choices

Keen for a pool for every day of the week? On the new Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas, which sets sail in January, there will be a choice of seven pools. Four of them are in a slice of aquatic paradise known as Chill Island, including the Royal Bay pool, which will be the largest pool at sea – a whopping 152,000 liters of water on various levels and including several raised whirlpools.

Not satisfied with just one first, Icon of the Seas will also have the first suspended infinity pool at sea, surrounded by a multi-level sun terrace. But it’s not all lazing and floating around. Thrillseekers will love the largest waterpark at sea, too. Thrill Island will have six slides, featuring the first open freefall slide at sea, the first family raft slide at sea and Storm Chasers, two blue mat racer slides – also a first!

Those who require a guaranteed seat by the pool could opt for the ultimate privacy with an Edge Villa aboard Celebrity Cruises’ Edge series ships. Each luxury two-storey villa boasts a private plunge pool on the terrace.

Pool For Every Taste

Meanwhile, on the new Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, cruisers can feel as though they’re swimming up to the horizon to enjoy panoramic ocean views at the infinity pools on either side of the ships.

For families looking to cruise Australian waters, Carnival Splendor is a standout, with an array of pools for every taste. The adults-only Serenity pool is the place to secure a cabana after enjoying a soak in the Cloud 9 Spa’s Hydrotherapy Pool.

On Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas, sailing out of Brisbane from October, there’s not only the Flowrider wave pool to get gnarly in, there are two outdoor and two indoor pools, which means you can lounge, dip, sip and repeat, rain, hail or shine.
