Two senior American tourists died in Peru when their cruise ship La Estrella Amazonica on which they were touring the Amazon River caught fire on tuesday.
In the pre dawn hours the fire broke out from the couples cabin. On noticing the flames, the ship’s crew raised an alarm and went to their rescue. While rushing them to the hospital in Iquitos the couples, Larry Morris Hammer – 74 and Cristy Jeins Hammer – 72, died, said the head of the Iquitos port authority, Oscar Garrido.
At the time the blaze broke out, the cruise ship was in the Tahuayo region, heading for the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, the largest natural protected area in the country. Garrido said the bodies of the U.S. citizens were taken to the morgue in Iquitos.
The head of the Iquitos port authority added that the reason for the fire on the cruise ship is still unknown. The ship is currently docked as investigations are underway.
