Seaspan and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) showcased the design at an industry summit in Copenhagen, Denmark. They received approval for the design of a 15,000-TEU ammonia-powered dual-fuel container vessel.

SABRE Project

The vessel, designed by Seaspan with assistance from Finnish ship designer Foreship, is part of the second phase of the “SABRE project”. SABRE is a pilot project spearheaded by maritime non-profit MMMCZCS to examine ammonia bunkering in Singapore.

The SABRE consortium will construct ammonia bunker vessels under the project. Seaspan’s container ship will test the bunkering ammonia from bunker vessels.

Singapore Set Lead

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore is likely to start ammonia bunkering by 2026.

Developing ammonia-fueled vessels will encourage ammonia suppliers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to invest in ammonia, Seaspan’s chief operating officer Torsten Pedersen added.
