On August 3, Ocean Network Express (ONE), in collaboration with Anchor Ship Partners Co., Ltd. and KOZO KEIKAKU ENGINEERING INC., hosted the 2nd Container Shipping Summit in Singapore, reads an official release.

With the presence of top industry experts, academic leaders, and prominent figures from Japan and Singapore, the summit marked a significant milestone in charting a sustainable future for container shipping.

Charting a sustainable future for container shipping

The summit began with an opening address by ONE’s CEO, Jeremy Nixon, who emphasized the importance of collaboration among public and private sectors, academia, and industry. The event’s focus was not solely on ONE’s objectives but the collective endeavour to foster innovation, efficiency, and environmental stewardship across the entire industry.

The presence of esteemed guests such as Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Mr Baey Yam Keng and His Excellency Hiroshi Ishikawa, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Singapore, lent further gravity to the occasion.

Mr Baey applauded ONE’s longstanding contributions to Maritime Singapore, including digitalPORT@SG, cybersecurity initiatives, and maritime talent development. He also outlined Singapore’s vision for the maritime industry, including decarbonization, innovation, and talent management.

Ambassador Ishikawa, in his opening speech, expressed conviction that cooperation between Japan and Singapore would be pivotal in driving the shipping industry forward.

ESG enhancements

Panel discussions formed the backbone of the summit, with topics ranging from research and development in terminals and ports, advancements in ship technologies, maximizing container shipping supply chains, to enhancing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) measurements.

Leading maritime stakeholders such as the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), PSA International, Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF), and scholars from universities like Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS), among others, contributed to rich dialogues.

Real-time optimization through AI technologies

Real-time optimization through AI technologies and collaboration with terminal authorities were highlighted, along with the potential of close collaboration between academia and industry in enhancing route planning and yield management.

Furthermore, robust debates ensued regarding the establishment of an ESG framework, actively engaging all stakeholders, and fostering maritime talents through idea and talent exchanges between industry and academia.

The 2nd Container Shipping Summit solidified a shared vision for the container shipping industry. It underscored the need for close collaboration across different sectors, with a clear call to action to seize opportunities and tackle future challenges.
