  • LomarLabs and Blue Dot Change collaborate on a nature-based catalyst dispenser to reduce methane emissions in the atmosphere, addressing its potent greenhouse effect.
  • Methane, with its high global warming potential, is naturally broken down by chlorine, sunlight, and iron in ocean air, a process Blue Dot Change’s technology aims to accelerate.
  • By deploying this innovative system on commercial ships, the partnership seeks to make a substantial impact on shipping’s net-zero goals and contribute significantly to global climate repair efforts.

Innovative Methane Reduction Technology

LomarLabs, a unit of London-based Lomar Shipping, has partnered with Silicon Valley-based tech start-up Blue Dot Change to develop, design, and test a nature-based catalyst dispenser aimed at reducing methane in the atmosphere. This collaboration represents a significant step toward addressing methane’s potent greenhouse gas impact on climate change.

Methane’s Climate Impact

Methane, with its significant global warming potential, poses a substantial threat to the environment. On a 20-year timescale, methane is 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide. LomarLabs and Blue Dot Change’s innovative solution seeks to harness the natural process of breaking down methane to mitigate its harmful effects on climate.

Nature-Based Technology

The technology utilizes chlorine, abundant in ocean air as ions, along with sunlight and iron from airborne dust, to naturally break down methane. Blue Dot Change’s catalyst dispenser releases iron-rich particles containing chloride into the atmosphere above oceans via ships. Importantly, the emissions are synchronized with optimal meteorological conditions to maximize efficiency.

A Path Towards Climate Repair

The collaboration between LomarLabs and Blue Dot Change has the potential to significantly contribute to the shipping industry’s net-zero objectives and climate repair efforts. By adopting this innovative technology, commercial ships could play a crucial role in reducing rising temperatures by removing methane from oceanic air. The partnership aims to have the first fully operational system deployed on a Lomar vessel by late 2024 or early 2025, marking a promising step towards a more sustainable maritime future.
