Yara Clean Ammonia, North Sea Container Line, and Yara International are teaming up to create the “Yara Eyde,” the world’s inaugural ammonia-fueled container ship. This vessel will ply the route between Germany and Norway, heralding a significant breakthrough in emissions-free shipping.
Yara Clean Ammonia
The Yara Eyde is designed for the trade route connecting Oslo, Brevik, Hamburg, and Bremerhaven. Beginning in 2026, it will enable Norwegian businesses to export products with drastically reduced emissions and make emissions-free imports into Norway possible.
Commenting on the announcement, Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, the head of Yara Clean Ammonia, stated:
“Yara has chosen to participate in this project to show that this segment can create additional growth for ammonia in the short term. Yara will contribute to developing this new market, but we will strategically use our funds to develop the production and logistics segment and not prioritize ownership in ships.”
Ankarstrand added:
“Ammonia as a fuel does not pollute. When we produce ammonia from renewable energy or with natural gas where up to 95% of the CO2 emissions are captured and stored permanently, pure ammonia will quickly be a good solution for cutting carbon emissions in the maritime sector. Yara Eyde will demonstrate the maturity of ammonia as a maritime fuel.”
Environmental Safety
The Yara Eyde will be powered by low-carbon ammonia supplied by Yara Clean Ammonia. Azane Fuel Solutions will work on a bunkering network for pure ammonia in Norwegian and Scandinavian ports.
Support for the project comes from Enova and Innovation Norway, which will provide low-emission fuel for the ship in Brevik using planned barges.
Safety and environmental precautions are a top priority to ensure clean ammonia production, storage, and bunkering without adverse effects.
