  • MAN plans to launch, 75DF-M, a dual-fuel engine.
  • This engine adapts to run on 100% biofuels.
  • Carbon footprint will retain full fuel flexibility.

MAN Energy Solutions unveiled plans to launch the MAN 175DF-M, a dual-fuel version of its MAN 175D high-speed engine, operational with methanol by late 2026. This variant, suitable for newbuild and retrofit applications, has received the ‘fuel ready’ certification from DNV for its dual-fuel methanol technology, reports Man.

Sustainability And Efficiency

Florian Keiler, Head of High Speed at MAN Energy Solutions, emphasized the engine’s competitiveness in sustainability and efficiency. With the lowest fuel and lube-oil consumption plus extended overhaul times, it minimizes its environmental impact. Keiler highlighted the importance of methanol combustion as the next step in future fuels, alongside the engine’s adaptability to run on 100% biofuels.

Solutions For Four Stroke Engines

The MAN 175D engine reflects the company’s commitment to developing a methanol-ready engine portfolio to meet rising demand. Drawing on their success with two-stroke engines, they’ve optimized a solution for four-stroke engines, focusing on dual-fuel PFI technology, which promises high reliability, efficiency, and competitive life-cycle costs.

PFI Combustion Technology

Keiler stressed the importance of customer feedback in shaping the development of the 175DF-M. The engine’s design will utilize PFI combustion technology to achieve a high methanol share, optimal efficiency, and maximum output. Initial testing and development are set to commence in 2024, culminating in a field test of the methanol engine in 2026, followed by its sales release by the year’s end. The MAN 175DF-M’s carbon footprint will be reduced to zero while retaining full fuel-flexibility for operation anywhere in the world.
