New dangers continue to emerge along the Red Sea and off the Yemeni coast with the latest being armed gangs attack on merchant ships. Ship officers express their serious concerns with such incidents as they threaten the lives of seafarers and international trade flows.

Rising Threats in the Gulf of Aden

One example involves armed Somali pirates attempting to hijack a commercial tanker off the Gulf of Aden. Pirates are believed to be responsible for the subsequent missile firings from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen; this is a disturbing indication of sea crime control.
