COSCO Group shipyard to retrofit four COSCO Line vessels to dual-fuel ME-LGIM operation; option exists for further nine ships, says an article published on man b&w website.
Partnership For Sustainability
COSCO Heavy Industry Shanghai Co. Ltd. has entered an eco-friendly partnership with MAN Energy Solutions. The collaboration aims to retrofit four main engines from COSCO Line’s ‘Camellia’ and ‘Virgo’-class vessels, contributing to sustainable maritime practices.
Retrofitting For Dual-Fuel Capability
The vessels, currently equipped with single-fuel MAN B&W 11S90ME-C10.5 engines, will undergo a transformation to dual-fuel MAN B&W 11S90ME-LGIM10.5 units. This retrofit enables the vessels to operate on both fuel-oil and methanol, marking a pioneering step in COSCO’s environmental initiatives.
First Methanol-Powered Vessels In COSCO’s Fleet
Upon completion of the retrofit, these vessels will become the first in COSCO’s fleet to sail on methanol. This move underscores COSCO’s commitment to exploring alternative, greener propulsion methods and reducing its environmental impact.
Comprehensive Turnkey Solution
COSCO Heavy Industry Shanghai Co. Ltd. will play a pivotal role as a complete turnkey solution provider for the retrofits. This encompasses engineering, parts procurement, project management, onsite technical assistance, sea-trial support, and recertification services.
Expanding The Environmental Impact
The contract also includes an option for the retrofit of an additional nine vessels, demonstrating a potential widespread adoption of methanol retrofitting in COSCO’s fleet. The industry anticipates that this initiative will have a positive ripple effect, influencing further vessels globally.
Global Trend, Methanol Retrofit for Decarbonization
More than 300 vessels worldwide already feature MAN Energy Solutions’ S90 engines. The methanol retrofit trend is expected to gain momentum, contributing to a broader industry shift toward dual-fuel capability and lower emissions.
Environmental Commitment Amid Regulatory Standards
COSCO’s decision aligns with evolving regulatory standards and the industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions. Retrofitting to dual-fuel operation stands out as an effective strategy for meeting emission-control measures, including those outlined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and regional legislation.
China’s 2030 Targets And COSCO’s Proactive Stance
COSCO’s proactive approach to green initiatives aligns with China’s ambitious goal to peak carbon emissions by 2030. By opting for methanol retrofitting, COSCO leads the way in embracing sustainable practices and steering the maritime industry toward a cleaner, more environmentally conscious future.
