Wärtsilä Hybrid Propulsion Chosen For New Cargo Vessels

Wärtsilä, a technology group, is set to provide an integrated hybrid propulsion system for three new self-discharging cargo vessels under construction at the Royal Bodewes shipyard in the Netherlands. These vessels, owned by Aasen Shipping, will incorporate Wärtsilä’s latest engine addition, the Wärtsilä 25, launched in September 2022.

Contract Impact

Wärtsilä’s successful hybrid solution for ‘Aasfoss’ and ‘Aasfjell’ vessels influenced the new contract. They collaborate early in newbuild projects to optimize vessel performance and reduce project risks.

Hybrid Advancements

Vessel Specifications

Three 9500 DWT vessels will integrate Wärtsilä equipment, including engines, NOx reduction systems, gearboxes, and hybrid systems with 620kWh batteries. Scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026, these vessels are part of Royal Bodewes’ extensive shipbuilding legacy, constructing various vessels since 1812.

The shipyard concurrently operates in three locations in the north of the Netherlands, currently constructing efficient hybrid-powered self-discharging vessels with methanol readiness among their orders.
