- Stena Line plans to launch a new freight service between Dublin and Birkenhead.
- The service will utilize the 12 Quays terminal in Birkenhead.
- Stena Horizon’s absence affects the Rosslare to Cherbourg route, without a cover ship.
Stena Line plans to launch a new freight service between Dublin and Birkenhead starting mid-February 2024. The route replaces P&O Ferries Liverpool to Dublin service following their closure due to contract renewal failure with Peel Port, reports NIFERRY.
Operational Details
Initially, one ship will serve the route, departing Dublin in the morning and returning from Birkenhead in the evening. The service will utilize the 12 Quays terminal in Birkenhead under an extended agreement until at least 2100.
Selection Process & Expansion
Dublin Port Company chose Stena Line to operate from Dublin’s T5 terminal, ruling out services to Holyhead. Stena Line intends to expand the service with increasing demand, strengthening logistics hubs across the Irish Sea.
Vessel Deployment & Uncertainties
STENA HORIZON is likely to serve the Dublin-Liverpool route, temporarily replacing its usual service. The focus of the new services freight traffic (accompanied, unaccompanied, or mixed) remains unclear.
Impact on Routes & Services
STENA HORIZON’s absence affects the Rosslare to Cherbourg route, without a cover ship provided during this period. Seatruck Ferries will expand services between Dublin and Heysham, increasing departures and capacity at Terminal 4.
Terminal & Business Developments
Dublin Port’s shared license to Stena Line and Seatruck Ferries at Terminal 5 aims to maximize freight movement through existing infrastructure.
CLdN, associated with Seatruck, will increase its Liverpool terminal’s size at Brocklebank Dock.
Dublin Port’s Perspective
Dublin Port Company emphasizes the importance of competitive shipping routes and welcomes Stena Line’s new route while supporting Seatruck Ferries’ growth.
