  • Ocean Network Express, a shipping joint venture, announced the rerouting of its vessels away from the Suez Canal and Red Sea for the safety of its crew.
  • The decision, prompted by concerns over attacks by Yemeni militants and the broader impact on global commerce, involves either diverting ships around the Cape of Good Hope or temporarily pausing their journeys in secure locations.
  • The move aligns with a multinational effort, led by the United States, to protect trade routes in the Red Sea amidst heightened tensions.

ONE’s Safety Priority

On December 19th, Ocean Network Express (ONE), a container shipping alliance between Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Nippon Yusen, and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, announced its decision to redirect ships away from the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, citing the immediate need to prioritize the safety of its crew.

This measure, labeled as a temporary safety protocol, will involve either diverting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope or temporarily halting their journeys to relocate them to secure locations, as stated on the company’s website.

Red Sea Protection

On Tuesday, the United States initiated a multinational effort aimed at protecting trade in the Red Sea due to attacks from Iran-backed Yemeni militants.

These assaults prompted significant freight companies to change their routes, raising worries about a lasting global economic impact.
