Trade and employer association, Danish Shipping, announces a pivotal moment as over 80% of the new ship tonnage for Danish shipping companies is planned to be propelled by green fuels. Out of the 67 new ships in the order book, a decent 52% will harness environmentally friendly alternatives, marking a remarkable three-year consecutive growth in Danish vessels.

The surge in orders reflects a 7% increase compared to the previous year, underscoring the maritime industry’s commitment to sustainable practices. Over 80% of the newly ordered tonnage is designed to operate on green fuels, showcasing a substantial shift towards eco-conscious maritime solutions, reveals Danish Shipping.

Danish shipping companies demonstrate their dedication to sustainability across various ship segments, from containerships to tugboats. Jacob K. Clasen, CEO of Danske Rederier, expresses enthusiasm, noting, “The majority of new tonnage is on ships capable of sailing on green fuels. This shift not only contributes to environmental goals but also involves the replacement of older, less energy-efficient ships, marking a significant and welcome development.”
Maersk’s Role in Green Shipping
Major player AP Møller-Mærsk leads the charge with pioneering initiatives, commissioning the world’s first container ship, Laura Mærsk, capable of sailing on green e-methanol. “Maersk is committed to innovative and sustainable shipping practices, evident in our latest ventures,” declares the company.

With a focus on achieving climate-neutral global shipping by 2050, Denmark aims to foster a market for green fuels and unlock the potential of offshore wind, Power-to-X, CCUS, and green fuels.
Industry Collaboration for a Greener Future
During COP28, Maersk and other container shipping companies signed a declaration urging concrete regulatory measures to expedite the industry’s green transition. Additionally, Denmark and the USA announce collaboration with the Maersk McKinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, financing pre-feasibility studies for green corridors in the Global South—shipping routes where ships can bunker green fuels, highlights the association. The industry demonstrates its commitment to tangible actions and collaborations for a sustainable and responsible future on the high seas.
