French maritime firm Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has secured a construction deal with China’s CSSC Wuchang Shipbuilding for three eco-friendly roll-on/roll-off vessels commissioned by Airbus. The vessels are set to reduce transatlantic CO2 emissions significantly.
Fleet Renewal and Emission Reduction
In line with Airbus’ fleet renewal efforts, LDA will build, own, and operate these wind-assisted propulsion vessels, scheduled for deployment in 2026. The project aims to cut annual transatlantic CO2 emissions, forming a crucial part of Airbus’ strategy to slash overall industrial emissions by 63% by 2030.
Innovative Technology and Sustainable Shipping Practices
The upcoming ROROs will feature six Flettner rotors, dual-fuel engines, and advanced routing software. This technology optimizes transatlantic journeys, leveraging wind propulsion and avoiding drag caused by adverse ocean conditions. The vessels, crucial for transporting aircraft subassemblies between Europe and the United States, mark a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices.
The collaboration builds on a successful partnership between Wuchang Shipbuilding and LDA Company, with a proven track record of efficient operations and ongoing construction projects.
