Drunken Shipmaster Arrested at Port of Felixstowe

The master of a container ship was apprehended at the Port of Felixstowe for operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol. Zbigniew Chowaniec admitted to being more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit, registering 93 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, while in charge of a cargo ship.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings Unfold After Pilot’s Concerns

Chowaniec’s arrest came to light after a pilot, tasked with guiding the ship into port, became suspicious of the shipmaster’s inebriated state. The pilot, who had boarded the vessel from Harwich, raised concerns with port authorities, leading to the involvement of port police. The shipmaster pleaded guilty in Suffolk Magistrates’ Court and was granted conditional bail, awaiting sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court on February 12.
