Exploring a Replacement: Wan Hai Lines for Hapag-Lloyd in THE Alliance

Former Yang Ming Marine Transport Chairman, Bronson Hsieh, has proposed Wan Hai Lines as a potential replacement for Hapag-Lloyd within THE Alliance. With Hapag-Lloyd’s recent decision to leave and form Gemini Cooperation with Maersk Line, speculation arises about potential restructuring in existing alliances.

Wan Hai Lines: A Strong Contender with Ambitions

Wan Hai Lines, currently the 11th largest global operator with ambitions to launch Asia-Europe services and the recent acquisition of eighteen 13,000 TEU ships, is considered a significant contender for THE Alliance, according to Hsieh. However, Hsieh remains skeptical about ZIM Line, the 10th largest operator, joining any alliance due to geopolitical concerns surrounding the Red Sea crisis. This crisis involves attacks on Israel-bound or Israeli-owned ships by Iran-backed Houthi rebels. With Hapag-Lloyd’s departure, Ocean Network Express (ONE) is set to become the largest member of THE Alliance, potentially influencing the alliance’s future. Observers suggest that Wan Hai Lines could enhance its profitability through alliance participation, but the company’s spokesperson remains non-committal, emphasizing their exploration of various options to improve slot utilization efficiency.
