New Emission Control Areas (ECAs) On The Horizon

578

The previously announced Mediterranean Sea ECA is set to take effect on 1 May 2025. In addition, Norway and Canada have submitted proposals to designate the Norwegian Sea and parts of the Canadian Arctic as ECAs and work is also underway on a new ECA in the North-Atlantic Ocean, says an article published on gard website.

Summary

  • The Shipbuilding Anti-Vibration market is projected to reach USD 15.6 Billion by 2032, showcasing a notable growth trajectory from its USD 9.1 Billion valuation in 2022.
  • Amidst global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, measures are being implemented to address the impact of ship emissions on human health and the environment, particularly sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
  • The Mediterranean Sea ECA is scheduled to commence on May 1, 2025, aiming to control emissions.
  • Norway and Canada have proposed ECAs in the Norwegian Sea and parts of the Canadian Arctic. Discussions are ongoing about a potential North-East Atlantic Ocean ECA.
  • ECAs impose restrictions on fuel sulfur content, prohibiting the use of fuel with more than 0.10% m/m sulfur or requiring equivalent emission reduction technologies.
  • North America is expected to dominate the Shipbuilding Anti-Vibration Market, driven by its significant naval presence. Asia Pacific anticipates the fastest market growth between 2023 and 2032.

Market Growth And Regulatory Landscape

  • The Shipbuilding Anti-Vibration market is projected to reach USD 15.6 Billion by 2032, showcasing a notable growth trajectory from its USD 9.1 Billion valuation in 2022.
  • Amidst global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, measures are being implemented to address the impact of ship emissions on human health and the environment, particularly sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Upcoming ECAs And Regulatory Changes

  1. Mediterranean Sea ECA

Scheduled to commence on May 1, 2025, the Mediterranean Sea ECA aims to control emissions and follows the Baltic Sea, North Sea, North American, and US Caribbean Sea ECAs.

  1. Proposed ECAs
  • Norway and Canada have proposed ECAs in the Norwegian Sea and parts of the Canadian Arctic.
  • Ongoing discussions about a potential North-East Atlantic Ocean ECA, linking existing ECAs in European waters.

ECA Criteria And Impact On Ship Operations

Fuel And Emission Control

  • ECAs impose restrictions on fuel sulfur content, prohibiting the use of fuel with more than 0.10% m/m sulfur or requiring equivalent emission reduction technologies.
  • New ships constructed after a certain date must comply with NOx Tier III limits specified in MARPOL Annex VI.

Regional Dominance

  • North America is expected to dominate the Shipbuilding Anti-Vibration Market, driven by its significant naval presence.
  • Asia Pacific anticipates the fastest market growth between 2023 and 2032, led by shipbuilding giants like China, South Korea, and Japan.

Challenges And Assessments

Effectiveness Of ECAs

While ECAs, like the North American ECA, have reduced particulate matter emissions, challenges persist in achieving expected reductions in NOx emissions due to slow fleet turnover to Tier III ships.

Recommendations For Ship Operators

  • Ship operators should ensure compliance with MARPOL requirements, specifically in bunkering procurement and onboard operating procedures.
  • Awareness of strict sulfur emission limits globally is essential, as local regulations may vary.

MARPOL Changes Beyond Emission Control

  1. MARPOL Annex I Amendment

From July 1, 2024, the prohibition on the use and carriage of heavy fuel oil (HFO) in Arctic waters under MARPOL Annex I will take effect.

  1. Ongoing Regulatory Landscape

Continuous monitoring of local regulations and proactive engagement with agents is recommended, considering the dynamic nature of regulatory changes.

In navigating these regulatory waters, ship operators must stay informed, adapt procedures, and collaborate with industry stakeholders to ensure compliance and contribute to a sustainable maritime future.

  1. Mediterranean ECA is going to be ECA only for SOX, aka SECA, but not for NOx (NECA). That means for newer ships I need not change over to Nox Tier III control, but only changeover fuel to LSMGO. Correct me if im wrong.

  2. My brother recommended I might like this web site He was totally right This post actually made my day You cannt imagine just how much time I had spent for this information Thanks
