Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 AS has commissioned Türkiye’s Tersan Shipyard to build four groundbreaking battery-powered autonomous double-ended ferries.

These ferries are hailed as the world’s first of their kind, promising to transform coastal transport with their blend of efficiency, safety, and innovation, reports Offshore Energy.

Zero-Emission Operation

Scheduled to commence operations between Lavik and Oppedal in Norway from September 1, 2026.

These ferries mark a significant step towards zero-emission transportation, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.

Autonomous Capabilities

Incorporating autonomous navigation and high levels of vessel function automation, the ferries aim to replace manual operations entirely.

Autocrossing and autodocking are the initial implementation of automation functions slated for 2027.

Full autonomous navigation to be in place by 2028, which showcases a pioneering leap in maritime technology.

Partnership and Progress

Tersan Shipyard previously collaborated with Fjord1 in 2021, constructing two eco-friendly battery-powered ferries for the Norwegian operator.

Prior to this latest endeavor, Tersan Shipyard delivered six all-electric ferries to Fjord1, underlining a successful and ongoing partnership in sustainable maritime solutions.
