A 115-year-old shipwreck has surfaced off the coast of Massachusetts, enthralling residents and historians in a breathtaking demonstration of nature’s ability. According to a report from the Trustees of Reservations, a 50-foot chunk of the schooner “Ada K. Damon” has resurfaced on Steep Hill Beach at the Crane Estate near Ipswich, reports Marine Insight.
Great Christmas Snowstorm
The long-buried remnants of the old vessel were revealed due to erosion caused by recent storms and abnormally high tides, which made this amazing discovery possible. The 84-foot schooner, the Ada K. Damon, was lost in the historic “Great Christmas Snowstorm” on December 26, 1909, while serving as a sand mover and fishing vessel.
The ship was abandoned despite the crew’s survival, and depending on the beach’s shifting sands, it would occasionally come into sight.
Given the importance of this discovery, The Trustees of Reservations are extending an invitation to the public to participate in their “Shipwreck Scholars” program. This program will allow participants to view and survey the wreck before it disappears again under the sands. The program is scheduled for March 16, April 6, and April 15. Entry costs for members and non-members will differ.
This discovery coincides with previous coastal instability; Salisbury Beach recently experienced storms that destroyed expensive infrastructure. Nonetheless, amid the chaos, the appearance of Ada K. Damon is a moving reminder of how constantly shifting our coasts are and the timeless stories they contain.
