An Oceanic Oasis: Cosco’s Visionary Shipyard Expansion In Zhoushan

223

A significant expansion project is underway at China’s major ship repair base of Zhoushan, spearheaded by Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Zhoushan). This endeavour includes the construction of a new 300,000 tonnes-class drydock alongside upgrades to existing facilities, aimed at enhancing ship repair capabilities and accommodating the world’s largest container ships.

Expanding Infrastructure

The focal point of the project is the construction of a massive drydock, boasting dimensions of 430 meters in length, 120 meters in width, and a depth of 12.5 meters. This state-of-the-art facility is slated for completion by the end of 2026, addressing the global shortage of repair capacity for mega container vessels.

Enhanced Repair Capacity

In addition to the new drydock, efforts will be made to upgrade the No.7 dockyard facility, further bolstering the shipyard’s ability to undertake comprehensive ship repair operations. These enhancements are expected to significantly increase the shipyard’s production capacity, allowing for the construction of eight vessels annually and the repair of 350 vessels.

Business Transformation and Growth

The expansion project signifies Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry’s strategic shift towards new energy, high technology, efficiency, and value-added markets. Situated in Zhoushan, a strategic location for maritime activities, the project is poised to stimulate new business growth, positioning the shipyard as a key player in the global shipbuilding and repair industry.
