On May 22, 2024, at approximately 3:16 p.m. local time, U.S. Central Command forces successfully intercepted four unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in a Yemeni region controlled by Iranian-backed Houthi forces, reports Marine Insight.
About the incident
The drones posed an immediate threat to the United States, coalition forces, and commercial ships operating in the area.
According to a statement issued by US Centcom, the decision to intercept and destroy the UAS was made to safeguard freedom of navigation and the safety and security of international waters.
The quick and decisive response demonstrates the U.S. and its allies’ commitment to regional peace and security.
In another incident, the Houthi group launched a missile targeting a commercial vessel navigating the Red Sea.

In recent months, the Houthis have launched multiple attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, demanding that Israel cease its war in Gaza, which has killed over 35,000 Palestinians.
The conflict began after Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, killing around 1,200 people and kidnapping 250 others.
Since November, the Houthis have launched over 50 strikes on ships, seizing one vessel and sinking another, according to the US Maritime Administration.
The threat has caused a decline in shipping across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
In recent weeks, the frequency of Houthi attacks has decreased, but the rebels have claimed to have shot down US surveillance drones.
