The CMA CGM Sao Paolo, a 13,000-teu LNG-powered container ship, was officially delivered to the French shipping company CMA CGM by China’s Hudong-Zhonghua on May 23. This vessel, named after Brazil’s largest city, successfully completed its “two-in-one” trial in just 6.5 days.
Fleet Expansion
The Sao Paolo is the fourth of six 13,000-teu LNG-powered container ships that Hudong-Zhonghua is constructing for CMA CGM. The shipbuilder delivered the first vessel, CMA CGM Bahia, in December of last year, followed by the CMA CGM Buzios earlier this year and CMA CGM Paraty in April. Hudong-Zhonghua plans to deliver the remaining two vessels later this year, with all six ships set to operate on the South American route.
Collaborative Efforts
In addition to Hudong-Zhonghua, Jiangnan Shipyard is also building six LNG-powered containerships for CMA CGM as part of a deal announced in April 2021. However, the vessels from Jiangnan will have a capacity of 15,000 units each.
Advanced Features
The new LNG-powered containerships, including the CMA CGM Sao Paolo, are equipped with GTT’s Mark III containment system and WinGD’s dual-fuel propulsion. The vessel’s LNG tanks have a capacity of 14,000 cubic meters, enhancing their efficiency and environmental performance.
