John Lee, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), announced on Monday the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) cities and international maritime organizations. This initiative aims to enhance Hong Kong’s maritime and port development.
Strengthening International Maritime Partnerships
During a meeting with the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Secretary-General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), Lee highlighted Hong Kong’s active engagement with international maritime partners. Hong Kong participates in IMO meetings and committees to stay updated on global shipping trends and regularly updates local marine legislation to align with IMO regulations.
Recognition as a Leading International Shipping Center
Lee emphasized Hong Kong’s global standing as an international shipping center, ranking fourth in the 2023 Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Center Development Index Report. This ranking reflects Hong Kong’s strong port conditions, maritime services, and business environment, underlining its recognized status in the international shipping community.
Strategic Plans for Maritime and Port Development
The chief executive noted the national support for Hong Kong’s status as an international shipping center, as outlined in the national 14th Five-Year Plan and the GBA Development Plan. He highlighted the HKSAR government’s Action Plan on Maritime and Port Development Strategy, introduced last year, which outlines strategies to boost the competitiveness of Hong Kong Port and develop a high-value-added maritime services cluster.
