The Seafarers’ Charity has officially announced His Majesty King Charles III as their new Patron, following the legacy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Paul Butterworth, Chair of Trustees, made The announcement at the charity’s Annual Meeting at Fishmongers’ Hall in London. This continues the Royal Family’s support since the charity’s founding in 1917 by King George V.
A Century of Royal Support
Since its establishment, The Seafarers’ Charity has benefitted from the patronage of the Royal Family, starting with King George V, then King George VI, and most recently, Queen Elizabeth II. The new patronage of King Charles III upholds this tradition, highlighting the ongoing royal commitment to addressing seafarer hardship both at sea and on land. Chief Executive Deborah Layde expressed pride and gratitude for the continued Royal Patronage, which underscores the importance of the charity’s mission.
Supporting Seafarers Worldwide
As the only global maritime grant-funder, the Seafarers’ Charity plays a crucial role in supporting maritime welfare charities and seafarers. Annually injecting at least £2 million into various programs, the charity focuses on enhancing safety and welfare for naval professionals in 2023 alone, the charity awarded over £2.4 million in funding, impacting over 600,000 people through its partner organizations.
Celebrating Achievements and Future Goals
The Annual Meeting featured guest speakers Clare Scherer MBE, Tim Hill MBE, and Simon Grainge, who shared their organizations’ successes made possible by The Seafarers’ Charity’s funding. These reflections on recent achievements highlighted the charity’s pivotal role in the maritime support ecosystem and its commitment to continuing its impactful work under the new royal patronage of King Charles III.
