The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) and its partners have successfully demonstrated the use of LNG-ammonia dual-fuel engines in marine applications. This innovative technology, supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, marks a significant step towards environmentally friendly marine engines by using ammonia, a promising carbon-neutral fuel.

Successful Demonstration of LNG-Ammonia Dual-Fuel Engine

The joint research team, led by principal researcher Cheol-Woong Park, showcased the stable combustion of a high-power marine engine using ammonia fuel. The testing at the KR Test & Certification Center verified the technology’s capability to maintain high thermal efficiency and power output while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 50%.

Overcoming Challenges of Ammonia as a Fuel

Ammonia’s use as a fuel presents challenges such as corrosiveness, toxicity, and high ignition energy requirements. The research team addressed these issues by optimizing the ammonia fuel injection timing and combustion speed, and by changing the O-ring material in the supply system to prevent corrosion and leakage.

Future Applications and Environmental Impact

The successful demonstration of the MW-class LNG-ammonia dual-fuel engine opens the door to broader applications beyond marine engines, including automobiles and generators. This technology not only complies with greenhouse emission regulations but also positions Korea at the forefront of the shipbuilding industry’s shift towards sustainable energy sources.
