  • French energy giant TotalEnergies has placed an order with China’s Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard for the construction of a new 18,600-cubic meter LNG bunkering vessel.
  • This move signifies TotalEnergies’ commitment to expanding its presence in the growing LNG bunkering market.

Details of the Agreement

The agreement includes the construction of one firm 18,600-cbm vessel, with the option for an additional ship in the future. Spanish company Ibaizabal will be responsible for chartering the vessel.

Advanced Technology for Enhanced Performance

This new addition to TotalEnergies’ fleet will boast advanced technology, featuring GTT’s Mark III Flex containment system for safe and reliable LNG storage. Additionally, the vessel will be equipped with Wärtsilä’s latest W25DF engine, designed to offer improved fuel efficiency and reduced methane slip, contributing to cleaner operations.

Commitment to Cleaner Maritime Operations

“This new vessel represents a significant step forward in our strategy to expand our LNG bunkering operations,” said a spokesperson for TotalEnergies. “We are confident that this investment will not only benefit our company but also contribute to the wider adoption of LNG as a cleaner fuel source for the maritime industry.”

Building on a Successful Partnership

Hudong-Zhonghua is a familiar partner for TotalEnergies, having previously constructed the Gas Vitality and Gas Agility vessels currently operating in Marseille and Rotterdam, respectively. The new ship is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

Responding to Growing Demand for LNG

The order comes on the heels of TotalEnergies celebrating its 100th LNG bunkering operation earlier this year with the Gas Vitality. The growing demand for LNG as a marine fuel alternative is prompting industry leaders like TotalEnergies to invest in expanding their bunkering infrastructure.
