The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF) is set to launch its digitalized Ship Inspection Report Programme (SIRE 2.0) on September 2, 2024, marking a significant advancement in tanker inspection standards for the marine industry. This transition from the previous SIRE Vessel Inspection Questionnaire (VIQ7) to SIRE 2.0 aims to enhance safety and operational assessments of tankers and their crews through a risk-based approach and improved reporting tools, reports Safety4sea.

About the Phase 3 rollout

Phase 3 of the rollout has provided extensive testing and engagement opportunities for industry stakeholders, ensuring readiness for the full implementation of SIRE 2.0. Aaron Cooper, OCIMF’s Programmes Director, underscores the importance of the next 60 days for preparation, urging users to familiarize themselves with the new procedures and tools, align internal systems, and complete necessary pre-inspection questionnaires.

SIRE 2.0 introduces bespoke inspections tailored to each vessel’s risk profile, conducted using intrinsically safe tablet devices. Inspectors will utilize the Compiled Vessel Inspection Questionnaire (CVIQ) to provide detailed marine assurance data, emphasizing hardware, processes, and human factors. This digital transformation is expected to elevate inspection standards and requires a cultural and logistical adjustment across the industry.

Anastasios Kartsimadakis of Tsakos Shipping and Trading highlights that SIRE 2.0 will elevate inspection standards by focusing on comprehensive onboard assessments, particularly in evaluating human factors. Industry stakeholders are encouraged to utilize OCIMF’s resources to ensure readiness for the forthcoming changes in tanker inspections.
