Blackout, Propulsion Failure, Grounding, and more – Cyclone Roanu Wrecks Havoc!

Cyclone Roanu wrecks havoc in Bangladesh, kills at least 22 people and injured 100 others in the coastal districts of the country on Saturday.  There were three vessels reported to have run into trouble due to the storm besides scores of other ships damaged.

Engine failure troubles a general cargo vessel BANGLAR SHIKHA

At around 12:00 noon LT May 21, Strong wind and waves also dragged a Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) ship named ‘Banglar Shikha’ out to the sea from the place where it was anchored at Alfa point of the outer anchorage of Chittagong port.

Bangladesh Navy and Chittagong port authority vessel reportedly assisted in towing the vessel  to a safer place later.

Reports indicate that the ship lost both the engines due to power failure, while its crewmembers were trying to keep the ship in its position during the storm.

BSC Managing Director (MD) Commodore HR Bhuiyan reportedly said that, “Responding to our call, Bangladesh Navy and Chittagong port authority immediately sent their tag boats to rescue the ship.  And the ship could be taken to safer place by its officers and crewmembers.”

Tug AST LEGEND grounded by cyclone

On May 21, massive waves pushed a foreign ship, AST Legend, to the shore near Naval Academy at Patenga during the cyclonic storm.  The vessel was anchored on outer road Chittagong, lost her anchorage and drifted ashore.

A cargo vessel dragged anchor and drifted ashore during cyclone Roanu.  Since ship ran aground in the breaking yard area, it may be waiting to be dismantled.
