The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Microsoft to collaborate on innovative technologies. This partnership aims to leverage cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, robotics, and cybersecurity to foster the adoption and development of digital and green solutions in the maritime industry.

Enhancing Maritime Operations with AI and Digital Twins

MPA and Microsoft will trial the use of AI and digital twins to optimize vessel route planning, enhance safety, and reduce emissions in maritime operations. These technologies will also support just-in-time arrivals, minimizing vessel turnaround times in ports. Additionally, MPA and Microsoft will train early adopters and upskill workers to effectively use and implement these advanced solutions in their operations.

Strengthening Cybersecurity in the Maritime Industry

As part of efforts to bolster the maritime industry’s cyber resilience, MPA and Microsoft will explore synergies with MPA’s cybersecurity capabilities. This collaboration aims to enhance early detection of cyber threats and enable companies to take timely actions. By uplifting the cyber capabilities of maritime start-ups and enterprises, this partnership will contribute to a more secure and robust maritime ecosystem.

Developing Digital Solutions for SMEs and Energy Efficiency

MPA and Microsoft will co-develop new digital solutions or leverage existing Microsoft products to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the maritime sector. These solutions will focus on aggregating demand and improving energy efficiency in shipping and port operations. Utilizing Microsoft’s digital modeling, simulation tools, and analytics capabilities, the partnership will build spatial models to inform policy and decision-making on climate risk assessment, mitigation, and adaptation measures. This initiative aims to reduce business costs and carbon emissions, aligning with national and international emissions targets.
