Kongsberg Maritime Expands Hybrid Tanker Fleet

Kongsberg Maritime has secured a new contract with Danish operator Tärntank to design and equip its eleventh hybrid chemical tanker, which will feature wind-assist technology. This brings the total number of vessels ordered by Tärntank to 11, with the latest five incorporating this innovative technology. The new 15,000 dwt tankers are equipped with a suite of Kongsberg Maritime’s advanced technologies aimed at energy conservation and emission reduction.

Advanced Technologies for Sustainable Shipping

These hybrid vessels are capable of operating on diesel, biofuel, or methanol and are fitted with Tärntank’s proprietary battery-powered Hybrid Solution. Kongsberg Maritime’s propulsion system, included in these ships, promises over 6% fuel savings compared to other systems. The hybrid propulsion setup enhances operational flexibility and minimizes environmental impact.

Collaboration and Industry Impact

Rune Ekornesvåg, Kongsberg Maritime’s Sales Director for Ship Design, highlighted the significance of this contract as a reaffirmation of the industry’s shift towards sustainable shipping solutions. Claes Möller, CEO of Tärntank, praised the collaboration between Kongsberg Maritime, China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou), and Tärntank, emphasizing that the new design will exceed regulatory requirements for carbon footprint reduction.

Strategic Outlook and Industry Recognition

Kongsberg Maritime is responding to the growing demand for sustainable technologies by exploring future fuel types like methanol, ammonia, and biofuels, with a focus on long-range vessels. This approach aligns with the company’s strategy to lead in low-emission and sustainable shipping solutions. The design concept, featuring wind-assist technology, was recognized with the prestigious Nor-Shipping Next Generation Ship Award in 2023, further solidifying Kongsberg Maritime’s leadership in the industry.

Ongoing Construction and Future Deliveries

The latest batch of tankers for Tärntank is under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou, with the first delivery expected in 2025. Additionally, Kongsberg Maritime has a contract for two similar vessels (without suction sails) for Swedish operator Sirius Redri AB, bringing the total number of ships in this design series to thirteen.
