Egypt Warns IMO Of GHG Measures’ Impact On Global Food Security

57

Egypt has voiced concerns to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) about the potential negative effects of new greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction measures on global food security, particularly in vulnerable regions. The country’s proposal highlights how higher input and transport costs resulting from these measures could exacerbate food insecurity, especially in small island nations and least developed countries.

Impact of Rising Transport Costs on Food Security

Egypt argues that any increase in maritime transport costs due to GHG emission reduction efforts could lead to higher food prices. This is particularly worrying for basic and essential commodities, which could deepen food insecurities in vulnerable regions.

Call for Comprehensive Impact Assessment

The proposal emphasizes the need for a thorough assessment of the potential negative impacts of the IMO’s mid-term measures. Egypt urges further work on the Comprehensive Impact Assessment (CIA) report to accurately gauge the effects on smaller and more vulnerable nations before implementing these measures.

IMO’s Mid-Term Measures and Global Shipping Goals

The IMO plans to introduce mid-term measures next year as part of its 2023 GHG strategy, aiming to help the shipping industry achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. These measures may include a global pricing mechanism for GHG emissions from ships and a global fuel standard for marine fuels.
