Vard Wins Deal To Build OECV For Island Offshore

  • Island Offshore has signed a major deal by ordering a large ocean energy construction vessel from Vard, due for delivery in the first quarter of 2027, with options for two more.
  • The upcoming fleet vessels are of the VARD 3 25 design, developed in collaboration with Island Offshore.

Fincantieri’s Norwegian subsidiary, Vard, has won a new contract from Island Offshore to design and construct a second hybrid-powered ocean energy construction vessel (OECV), reads an official release.

Deal to build ocean energy construction vessel

In May, Island Offshore and Vard signed a contract for one firm OECVs, to be named Island Evolution, with an option for two sister vessels. This new contract confirms the first option.

The new vessel, scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2027, will be based on the Vard 3 25 design, developed in collaboration with Island Offshore. The vessel will be designed to support a wide range of underwater operations, including IMR, pipe laying, underwater infrastructure construction, and dive support.

This contract further solidifies the partnership between Vard and Island Offshore, with Vard having already delivered 41 vessels to the Norwegian operator.

It will also feature a 250-tonne offshore crane with active heave compensation and accommodations for 130 personnel. Additional features include a 1.7MWh energy storage system for hybrid propulsion, a heat recovery system to enhance energy efficiency, and provisions for low-emission alternative fuels. The vessel will also be equipped with two launch and recovery systems for ROV operations and will be designed to work with a walk-to-work gangway.

The hull will be built at Vard’s shipyard in Romania, while the completion of the vessel will be carried out at a shipyard in Norway.
