  • Brunvoll is upgrading Utkilen AS’s ice-classed vessels to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.
  • The project includes new gear transitions, propeller redesigns, and energy-saving devices.
  • The upgrades will be completed between autumn 2024 and spring 2025.

Brunvoll is set to implement major propulsion upgrades on two of Utkilen AS’s ice-classed vessels, Golfstraum and Rystraum. This initiative follows extensive technical studies and discussions, aiming to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions throughout the vessels’ remaining service life, reports Brunvoll.

Key Upgrades

The upgrades will include a new gear transition, propeller blade redesign, and the installation of Becker Mewis Ducts®, an energy-saving device.

These changes are the result of thorough analysis by Brunvoll’s hydrodynamicists, in collaboration with Becker Marine Systems. The focus is on optimizing propeller revolution speed and blade design to achieve maximum efficiency.

Utkilen AS is committed to decarbonizing its fleet by maximizing energy efficiency, reducing reliance on alternative fuels that require significant green energy for production.

Carl Ove Utkilen, Project Manager at Utkilen AS, emphasized their strategy of implementing energy-saving technologies across their fleet while staying updated on alternative fuel and propulsion developments.

“We are enthusiastic about this project and anticipate significant fuel consumption savings following the installation,” says Carl.

Collaboration for Greater Efficiency

The collaboration between Brunvoll and Becker Marine Systems has resulted in a design process that integrates the propeller and Becker Mewis Duct®, offering higher overall savings. By working together, they have optimized water flow and propulsion efficiency, leading to greater emission reductions than if the upgrades had been done separately.

The upgrades are scheduled to take place between autumn 2024 and spring 2025, with Brunvoll leading the process.

Mads Egseth Melbø, Sales Manager Retrofit at Brunvoll, said, “We will open the vessel up from the side to do a larger gear overhaul and change of gear ratio. Thereafter, the propeller improvements will take place. We look forward to seeing the upgraded vessels in action and are excited to follow up with Utkilen on operational results.”
