The HD Hyundai HeeMang Foundation, recently established, aims to support the bereaved families of shipyard workers who lost their lives in fatal industrial accidents. The foundation’s name, “HeeMang,” meaning “hope” in Korean, reflects its mission, reports Korea Times.

Support for Bereaved Families

On Monday, the foundation held its first board meeting at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan. During the second half of this year, it will begin awarding scholarships to the children of victims of shipyard accidents. From the first half of next year, the foundation will also cover living and medical expenses for the bereaved families and help them access legal services.

According to HD Hyundai, this is the first scholarship foundation in South Korea established specifically for the bereaved families of shipyard workers who died while on duty. The foundation’s creation was proposed by HD Hyundai Chairman Kwon Oh-gap, who saw it as a way for the company to fulfill its responsibility as a leading shipbuilder.

Leadership and Contributions

The foundation’s board of directors convened after receiving government approval and official registration. Former Employment and Labor Minister Lee Ki-kwon, who served in the ministry for 35 years, was appointed as chairman. HD Hyundai Chairman Kwon Oh-gap, who donated 100 million won ($75,000) to the foundation, was named honorary chairman.

Lee stated, “We will do our best to alleviate the sorrow of the bereaved, who lost their families due to fatal industrial accidents.”

Since 2011, HD Hyundai has been involved in various social contribution activities through its 1 Percent Sharing Foundation, where employees donate 1 percent of their base wage to important causes.

Last year, the conglomerate also established the HD Hyundai Honor Award to recognize individuals who have made exceptional philanthropic contributions.
