Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), a leading Japanese shipping operator, has recently taken delivery of a new LNG-powered pure car and truck carrier (PCTC). The vessel, named Nereus Highway, was constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipbuilding (Jiangsu), marking another step in the company’s efforts toward sustainable maritime transportation.
Vessel Specifications
Classed by DNV, the Nereus Highway measures 199.99 metres in length overall, with a beam of 38 metres, a depth of 39.28 metres, and a draught of nine metres. With a gross tonnage of 75,698, the vessel has the capacity to transport up to 7,080 vehicles, making it a substantial addition to K Line’s fleet.
Dual-Fuel Propulsion System
The ship’s propulsion is powered by a WinGD 7X62DF-2.1 electronically controlled, dual-fuel engine. This main engine operates on both LNG and diesel, allowing the vessel to achieve a service speed of 19 knots. The engine is supplied with LNG from a fuel tank with a total capacity of 2,439 cubic metres. To minimize environmental impact, the engine is equipped with technology to reduce methane slip and features an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system to further reduce emissions.
Fleet Expansion and Environmental Commitment
The Nereus Highway, registered under the Panamanian flag, is part of the same series as K Line’s earlier LNG-fueled PCTC, Century Highway Green, which was delivered in 2021. This addition reinforces K Line’s commitment to expanding its fleet with eco-friendly vessels, contributing to lower emissions in the global shipping industry.
