  • The company is pioneering remotely supported vessels with low-carbon, ammonia-ready designs.
  • Future vessels will focus on full autonomous and remote operation.

Houston-based marine robotics company Ocean Infinity has received the DNV’s Statement of Compliance for its Armada 78 fleet of offshore survey vessels, reports Offshore Energy.

Armada 78 Fleet Compliance and Upgrades

Ocean Infinity becomes the first company in the industry to meet the required standard for large vessels, allowing the company to begin onshoring marine tasks and activities. The first vessel in the Armada fleet to achieve compliance was Armada 78 03.

The next two vessels are in their final testing stages, with further upgrades being implemented to advance the company’s remote marine operations program. This achievement highlights Ocean Infinity’s innovative approach and commitment to technological advancement.

Ocean Infinity’s CEO, Oliver Plunkett, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment, stating, “This is a significant achievement for the team. My congratulations go to them all, as well as those who have worked with them and contributed at DNV and Vard, our ship builder.”

“Our approach is to pioneer with speed but not haste, becoming the first organisation to receive this Statement of Compliance is testament to that. I am looking forward to watching as we begin to put our ideas of onshoring marine activities and tasks into practice.”

Eco-Friendly Vessels Prepared for Green Ammonia

The eight 78-meter ammonia-ready Armada vessels were completed in January 2024. These vessels are designed with fuel cell and battery technology and are prepared to use green ammonia, contributing to a low-carbon future for marine operations.

Jarle Coll Blomhoff, Head of Digital Ship Systems at DNV, praised Ocean Infinity’s step-by-step approach, stating, “By proceeding step-by-step, beginning by moving some functions to a remote centre, and ensuring that these innovations are built on a foundation of expertise and trusted assurance, Ocean Infinity is helping the industry to move forward with confidence. That is why we are so pleased to have awarded them the first fleet wide Statement of Compliance with the DNV-CG-0264 Autonomous and remotely operated ships guideline for the first phase of Ocean Infinity’s onshoring plans.”

“This is an achievement that has also been acknowledged by the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). We are looking forward to continuing the journey with Ocean Infinity and MPA towards full autonomous and remote vessel operation.”

Expansion Plans

Ocean Infinity has placed an order for six new 86-meter robotic vessels from Vard, with the final vessel currently under construction.

These vessels, expected for delivery by 2025, are designed to operate from shore and use green ammonia as fuel, furthering Ocean Infinity’s goal of ultra-low carbon operations.
