A recent biofuel trial conducted by Idemitsu Kosan, detailed by ENGINE, successfully tested a B24 biofuel blend on the bunker tanker Kamui Maru. The trial used a 24% FAME-based biofuel derived from used cooking oil and 76% conventional marine fuel. Spanning 10 months, the test confirmed the viability of biofuel blends in marine operations without requiring equipment modifications, even in Hokkaido’s cold climate.

Smooth Operations in Cold Climates

The trial aimed to assess the biofuel blend’s performance in Hokkaido’s cold weather. Despite the harsh conditions, the vessel operated smoothly without any changes to equipment or procedures compared to conventional marine fuels, demonstrating the reliability of the B24 blend in diverse environments.

No Impact on Oxidation Stability

The test focused on long-term usage, particularly on the biofuel’s oxidation stability, a crucial factor for preventing sludge buildup and engine deposits. After 10 months, the vessel showed no adverse effects on performance, with the engine running as efficiently as with traditional fuels.

Future Expansion of Biofuel Use

Following the successful trial, which involved Shiraoi Oil, Narasaki Oil, and Hanshin Diesel Works, the companies plan to extend biofuel use beyond Hokkaido. The positive results mark significant progress in integrating sustainable biofuel blends into broader marine operations.
