HVO Adoption: Groupe Ocean Transitions to Renewable Diesel

36

  • Groupe Ocean is transitioning to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), reducing CO2 emissions by 80%.
  • All Groupe Ocean tugs in British Columbia will use HVO by the end of 2024.
  • This initiative is part of a larger environmental strategy, with a focus on sustainability and collaboration with the Musqueam community.

Groupe Ocean has officially announced the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a renewable diesel, for all port towing operations. This next-generation fuel is derived from renewable sources like vegetable oils, plant or animal residues, and used oils.

Major CO2 Emission Reductions

HVO offers a significant reduction in CO2 emissions—up to 80% compared to fossil fuels—marking an important step in lowering the shipping industry’s carbon footprint.

Testing and Transition Timeline

Since 2023, Groupe Ocean has been testing HVO’s efficiency at Delta Port and Fraser River sites. After extensive data analysis and approval from Transport Canada, the transition to HVO will be complete by the end of 2024. This shift will power all Ocean Group tugs in British Columbia.

The adoption of HVO is not merely a technical adjustment but part of Groupe Ocean’s broader strategy to reduce its marine ecological footprint.

Collaborative Agreement

Groupe Ocean’s transition aligns with its 2023 collaborative agreement with Musqueam Capital Corp., promoting sustainable navigation and reinforcing ties between the two parties on the Fraser River.

This collaboration also opens doors for career development in the Musqueam community. It also provides maritime job opportunities both on water and ashore.

Maritime Training and Job Creation

As part of the agreement, eight members of the Musqueam community have completed maritime training programs, with three now employed full-time on Ocean Group’s Fraser River and Vancouver Harbour tugs.

Future Outlook

The initiative has been well-received, creating meaningful employment opportunities and strengthening the relationship between Groupe Ocean and the Musqueam community.

With this strategic move, Groupe Ocean positions itself as a leader in the marine industry, reinforcing its dedication to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
