The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) has released a comprehensive report titled The State of the Industry 2024 – Insights on Digital Evolution in Container Shipping, according to Safety4Sea. This study analyzes the progress and challenges in digitalisation within the container shipping sector, highlighting the role of digital standards and their impact on operational efficiency. The report, based on insights from 400 senior decision-makers and interviews, examines the adoption of key technologies such as electronic Bill of Lading (eBL) and API standards.

Increasing Adoption of Digital Standards

The report notes a significant increase in the adoption of DCSA standards in 2024, including a rise in eBL usage to 5% from 1.2% in 2021. This growth illustrates the shift towards digital solutions, which are improving real-time tracking and overall operational efficiency in the container shipping industry.

Challenges to Digitalisation

Despite the clear benefits, resistance to change and outdated infrastructure remain major barriers. Many cargo owners are ready to embrace digitalisation, but 66% report the need for external support to fully realise its potential.

Energy Efficiency as a Top Goal

Sustainability is a priority, with 65% of cargo owners identifying energy efficiency as their primary goal. Many are adopting digital solutions like route optimisation and reducing paper usage to lower their environmental impact.
