Alfa Laval receives a major order for ballast water management system replacements

  • 18 ballast water treatment systems (BWMS) will be replaced by Alfa Laval.
  • BWMS suppliers quit leading to a huge demand for after-sales services.
  • More than 250 systems were exchanged by Alfa Laval from other companies.

Alfa Lava reports that it has won a major contract to replace eighteen ballast water treatment systems for a prominent European owner, a reflection of the swelling market in retrofitting failed installations and Alfa Laval’s growth in ballast water treatment solutions.

BWMS market status

Soaring regulations are compelling shipping companies to spend more of their budget on keeping the functional system in use to reduce costs, avoid downtime, and avoid losses. BWMS retrofitting market saturation is almost complete with most suppliers reducing their commitment or withdrawing from this market segment, which limits upgrades and support opportunities, especially following failure of the system.

High demand for BWMS replacement

Alfa Laval has, over the last two years, replaced more than 250 systems from 30 manufacturers. However, the demand for replacement is rapidly increasing. “The consolidation of the BWMS market creates the necessity of replacing installed systems,” comments Tobias Doescher, Head of Global Sales, Business Development and Marketing, Alfa Laval PureBallast. More shipowners and management firms around the world approach us because of unsolved issues with their existing suppliers. We are ready to offer competitive and sustainable support.

Professional Approach to Replacement Projects

Alfa Laval specialises in system replacement with electrochlorination (EC) and UV technology. Qualified engineers appraise existing systems to identify which components require replacement and which can be retained to save customers many thousands of dollars. Every single replacement is designed to ensure that clients comply with BWMS. “The success of this offering validates the way Alfa Laval has chosen to work- partnering for the entire lifecycle of ballast water management equipment rather than being a one-time supplier,” says Peter Sahlén, Head of Alfa Laval PureBallast.

While other suppliers are exiting the market, we are investing in our experts, actively following the regulations, and offering new services to facilitate compliance. We have even launched our new PureBallast 3 Ultra, developed based on years of customers´ feedback.”
