At Gastech 2024 in Houston, classification society DNV awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai group for their cloud-based integrated Hyundai Intelligent Digital Twin Ship (HiDTS) system, marking a significant milestone in their three-year collaboration on Data-Driven Verification (DDV) of digital twin technologies, reports DNV.

Overview of the Cooperation

Since 2022, DNV and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) have been cooperating with Data-Driven Verification (DDV) for digital twin technologies.

The team successfully completed the ambitious three-year project. They received the Approval in Principle (AiP), meeting the class notation of DNV with the qualifier DT for DDV.

Milestone Achievement

This marks the first application of DDV to integrated HiDTS systems in the DNV Simulation Trust Center (STC) in Trondheim, Norway. It is among the breakthroughs toward realizing the full potential of digital twin technologies. It aims to achieve higher efficiency and reliability in maritime operations.

Project Phases and Objectives

The project has been divided into three key phases, each focusing on different systems as follows:

  1. Phase 01: Power Management System (PMS)
  2. Phase 02: Engine Control System
  3. Phase 03: Gas Management System (GMS) and Cargo Handling System (CHS)

The Research of the AiP focused on the possibility of applicability of simulation models of KSOE to conduct Data Driven Verification of such systems. They achieved this using DT technology. Each successive phase added other systems. Ultimately, they managed the entire process via an integrated ship system.

Successful Implementation of HiCONiS

The new combined automation system HiCONiS already pre-validated for LNG carriers. It was used in a vessel in September 2024, based on the results of pilot testing.

The AiP processes are carried out with DNV. The system completed sea trials in the vessel Hull no. 8196, HD HSHI. All these efforts testify to the efficacy of real-world application in maritime operations of digital twin technology.

Industry Perspectives on Digital Twin Technology

Kwangpil Chang, CTO of HD KSOE, said: “To trust the emerging technology that will be applied to future ships, we need evidence that it is completely secure under all conditions. Advancing Digital Twin and Autonomous Technologies

HD KSOE, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI), HD Hyundai Marine Solution (HD HMS) and DNV will continue their collaboration. They aim to assess the usability of digital twin and autonomous technologies.

This can be applied to large commercial marine vessels, including compliance with classification rules, international guidelines and applicable regulations. Based on the achievements of this project, the collaboration includes different applications, such as crew training services and hazardous systems.
