According to Port Technology, in August 2024, China’s major ports recorded impressive year-on-year (YoY) growth in container throughput. The Port of Shanghai saw a 7.9% increase, handling 4.51 million TEUs, while Ningbo Zhoushan Port experienced a 12.9% rise with 3.6 million TEUs. The Port of Shenzhen led with a 14.5% YoY increase, moving 3.15 million TEUs.
Ningbo Containerized Freight Index Declines in September
In September 2024, the Ningbo Containerized Freight Index (NCFI) averaged 1763.9 points, marking a 26% month-on-month (MoM) drop but a 172.5% YoY increase. Only one of the 21 routes saw a MoM increase in freight rates, while the rest declined.
China’s Strong Container Throughput in 2024
These port performances reflect China’s robust container movement, with the Port of Shanghai already processing 34.75 million TEUs in the first eight months of 2024, positioning Chinese ports as key players in global trade.
