On September 28th, Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation and Jiangsu Qinfeng Shipping Industry held a grand signing ceremony for the construction contract of sixteen 15,000/19600 DWT two-types of methanol single-fuel direct river-sea vessels. This is the first batch of domestic sea vessels using methanol as single fuel, which will become an important practice to promote the development of green shipping, reports iMarine News.

About the deal

Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation said it started the research and development of new energy vessels such as LNG and methanol in 2016, and the company’s 13,800 DWT LNG-ready, 15,500 DWT and 130-meter LNG dual-fuel-powered vessels are the first to apply new energy fuel vessels along the domestic coast.

In May this year, the company’s LNG dual-fuel direct river-sea vessel “Chuangxin 5” loaded grain from Zhoushan to Chongqing Luohuang Port, with a total route of 2630 kilometers, creating a historical first for China’s 10,000-ton direct river-sea vessel from the East coast to the Great Southwest, setting off a new wave of river-sea direct transport in the shipping industry.

The company has formed a complete supply chain system for the development, design, integration, investment, construction, operation and sales of new energy vessels. These two types of vessels signed this time are the first batch of sea vessels using methanol single fuel in China, and their development concept and application technology are in a leading position in the industry, which is of great significance in the context of responding to the national implementation of large-scale equipment renewal and technological transformation action plan.

The successful signing of sixteen direct river-sea vessels opened a new chapter in the capacity development of Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation. Compared with the traditional vessels, these two type of vessels have better capacity, and their transportation efficiency and versatility are significantly improved.

By methanol fuel technologies, lightweight design and shape line optimization, these two vessels can promote energy conservation and emission reduction with lower power consumption and higher efficiency.

These two vessels will use the international advanced methanol single fuel medium speed engine CS8L21DF-M and CS9L21DF-M. Previously, Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation had signed a batch sales contract for CS21M methanol fuel medium speed machine with The Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research institute (SMDERI) in August this year.

The CS21M methanol fuel medium speed machine with power covering 1-2MW, rated speed 1000r/min, using methanol cylinder direct injection technology route. It can achieve more than 90% methanol replacement rate, reduce 60% nitrogen oxide and 99% sulfur oxide emissions, and is recognized as a “strong chain brand” product by China Shipbuilding Industry Association.
