  • Metsä Group plans to reduce fossil-based CO2 emissions from wood supply by 30% by 2030, focusing on transport.
  • Collaboration with AtoB@C Shipping and hybrid electric vessels will drive emissions reduction by 2026.
  • Fleet modernization, operational efficiency, and renewable fuel adoption will support achieving these goals.

By 2030, Metsä Group is targeting a 30% reduction in fossil-based carbon dioxide emissions from its wood supply, compared to 2022 levels. Most of the emissions come from wood transport via lorry, train, and ship, reports News Cision.

Partnership with AtoB@C Shipping

Metsä Group and key partner AtoB@C Shipping are working together. They aim to reduce emissions from wood transport in the Baltic Sea region by 30% by 2030. These efforts are part of a broader commitment to cut emissions.

“Metsä Group’s emissions reduction target requires tangible plans and committed logistics partnerships enabling us to systematically move towards our 2030 target. In Metsä Group’s emissions reduction roadmap, the commitments made with our partners now encompass more than 90% of wood transports by sea,” says Hannu Alarautalahti, SVP at Metsä Group.

Fleet Modernisation for Lower Emissions

AtoB@C Shipping is introducing 12 hybrid electric vessels by 2026 as part of its investment program. These vessels will modernize the fleet and help reduce emissions through cleaner energy solutions.

In addition to the new vessels, emissions reductions will come from operational efficiency improvements. For example the Virtual Arrival concept and renewable bunker fuel adoption in ports.

Joint Efforts for Sustainable Shipping

“Cooperation is key to reducing emissions, and we are pleased that our customers are also committed to ambitious emissions reduction targets. Combined with other measures improving efficiency, the new Green Coaster hybrid vessels will create a good foundation for achieving our targets,” says Mikki Koskinen, Chair of AtoB@C Shipping.
