Japan’s shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has entered into a contract with Maehata Shipbuilding Corporation to construct a hybrid electric restaurant ship. This new vessel aligns with NYK’s ongoing commitment to sustainable maritime operations and its ESG initiatives. The ship will be completed by 2027, reports Offshore Energy.
Succeeding Lady Crystal
The new vessel will replace Lady Crystal, a 346-ton passenger ship built by Maehata Shipbuilding Corporation.
It will be operated by Cruise Club Tokyo, an NYK Group company. Lady Crystal has been in service for some time and the new ship will take over its operations.
Ship Specifications
The ship, measuring 48 meters in length, 9.5 meters in breadth, and 2.1 meters in draft, and a combination of batteries driving electric propulsion and conventional diesel engines will power the ships, mirroring the setup of many currently operating vessels.
NYK is considering integrating hydrogen fuel to achieve net-zero emissions, highlighting its focus on environmentally sustainable technology in maritime operations. This approach would make the ship a hybrid electric propulsion vessel.
Minimizing Environmental Impact
The 480-ton ship will reduce emissions and environmental impact beyond just air pollution. It also has features to lower vibrations, noise pollution, and fuel-oil odors, making it a ‘quieter, greener, and more comfortable’ experience for passengers.
NYK has continually invested in energy-efficient maritime solutions. Over the years, the company has tested and implemented a variety of technologies aimed at improving sustainability in the maritime industry.
Testing the Hz Navi System
In August 2024, NYK conducted a demonstration of the Hz Navi System. It is a new technology designed to reduce energy consumption by adjusting the generator’s frequency to optimal specifications.
This system was developed through a collaboration with Tsuneishi Shipbuilding.
Collaborating on Ship Recycling
In September 2024, NYK partnered with civil engineering company Oono Development to develop environmentally responsible ship recycling processes in Japan.
This initiative focuses on dismantling large ships and recycling them into high-quality steel scrap and other reusable materials.
