South Korea and Philippines Boost Maritime Ties Amid South China Sea Tensions

11

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos recently held a meeting in Manila to reinforce ties between their coast guards. The discussion centered around enhancing cooperation in tackling transnational crime, improving information sharing, and conducting joint search and rescue missions. Both leaders emphasized the shared commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and safety in the South China Sea.

Strengthening Maritime Cooperation

During the meeting, President Yoon highlighted the importance of upholding a rules-based maritime order, particularly in the South China Sea, where tensions have been rising due to competing territorial claims. He underscored the need for continued collaboration between South Korea and the Philippines to safeguard freedom of navigation and overflight, in line with international law. The shared understanding between the two nations reflects a mutual desire for a stable and secure maritime environment in the region.

South Korea’s Concerns Over the South China Sea

South Korea has repeatedly expressed concern over the escalating situation in the disputed waters. In March, Seoul voiced its alarm over China’s aggressive actions, including the use of water cannons against Philippine vessels. China’s expansion in the South China Sea, including the construction of artificial islands and the militarization of the area, has been a long-standing source of tension. Despite an international ruling that China’s claims lack legal basis, Beijing has continued its activities, which have disrupted fishing operations and harassed Philippine ships.

Broader Cooperation Beyond Maritime Security

The bilateral meeting also resulted in agreements beyond maritime security. The two countries signed cooperation pacts in areas such as critical raw material supply chains, underscoring the strategic importance of economic collaboration. A notable development was the feasibility study on reviving the Philippines’ Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, reflecting a shared interest in energy security and sustainable development.

Conclusion

As regional geopolitical complexities deepen, both South Korea and the Philippines recognize the necessity of working together for mutual prosperity and promoting a rules-based international order. President Marcos echoed this sentiment, expressing the importance of joint efforts in navigating the evolving geopolitical landscape to ensure the well-being of their nations and the stability of the region.
