A new hydrogen refueling station for heavy traffic has opened at the Port of Gothenburg, strategically located near one of the busiest gates, reports Container News.

First hydrogen refueling station

The station exclusively supplies green hydrogen, making it a vital resource for transitioning heavy transport to more sustainable fuels. Viktor Allgurén, Head of Innovation at the port, emphasized the station’s ideal location, which facilitates not only truck refueling but also provides service for work machinery, complementing existing electric charging stations.

Situated adjacent to Gate 6 at the Gothenburg RoRo Terminal, this station benefits from heavy traffic, with approximately 400,000 heavy vehicle passages annually. The anticipated relocation of Stena Line’s Germany and Denmark terminals to Arendal is expected to further increase vehicle activity in the area.

Operated by Hydri, the station is the first in a planned network of about 20 hydrogen stations in Sweden, set to be developed in 2024 and 2025. Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy and Chairman of the Board at Hydri, stated that the establishment of this station marks a significant step towards achieving a carbon-neutral transport sector.

This initiative is partially funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.
